This year’s Living Writers series kicked off in the month of September with three diverse authors.

It is a three-day journey from Hamilton, N.Y., to Teriberka, Russia, on the Barents Sea. Jessica Graybill, associate professor of geography and Russian and Eurasian studies, made the trek last July with student interns Yang Zhang ’21 and Isobel Hooker ’21, checking in for a week’s stay at one of the village’s first Airbnbs.

This summer, the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, N.Y. staged the world premiere of Blue, an opera exploring police brutality in black communities. A pre-show discussion with Õ¥Ö­¼§ professors on topics such as institutionalized racism preceded each of the production’s seven performances, and several of the shows included post-show talkbacks as well.

Audrey Ponder ’22 was selected for study-abroad organization LoopAbroad’s Veterinary Service Program, a two-week expedition focused on hands-on veterinary work.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members participated in a campuswide strike for climate change on Friday, September 20.

Following annual tradition, the Max A. Shacknai Center for Volunteerism, Outreach, and Education (COVE) organized a 9/11 Afternoon of Service. On Friday, Sept. 6, more than 70 student volunteers worked with eight nonprofits in Hamilton and neighboring towns to help local farms, promote environmental conservation, maintain trails, and preserve the Chenango Canal among other activities.

William Rosencrans ’19 will spend a year conducting biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., as a 2019 Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) recipient.

A two-day gathering titled Grafters X Change: Branches and Networks brought together Õ¥Ö­¼§ and local community members, eco-artists, and activists to foster creative community resiliency.
